Archive for August, 2007

So from what i can tell, there is no wireless outlet on the Playa that Lawrence can find.  This means your left with me.

Last night my friend Whitney and i attended the Slayer and Marlyn Manson show. We had a great time, The music of the two headlining bands was top notch. Slayer started their set rockin out with no time to spare. While the sound seemed to be lacking other then no pyrotechnics Slayer did not fail to deliver. There was a lot of anti-US government propoganda displayed on the back drop during the set, which seems to be a constant theme of all music acts I’ve seen this year.

Next up was Manson. This was my first time I’ve seen MM, as  well as Whitney’s, and it must be said we are both fans of  Brian Hugh Warner as a person. The Show was great! His new album seems to be a wonderful new collection of “love songs”. We were also very pleased with the Heart Shaped Glasses, it felt like modern Bowie. The only bad thing about Manson is that his set was only 1 hour long.

We had a wonderful time. I didn’t mention the opening band, mainly because I’m not a fan of the type of music they were playing. We walked over to the right side when they started playing to get away from them. I believe that, for what they were, they were liked because during their set the lawn seemed to fill up.

I received word from the Deckardo Burning man camp late last night saying they had just reached Kingman around 12 am. The had left Albuquerque around 4 pm yesterday and were expecting an hour lay over in Gallup for Drew’s truck to cool down as he just install a new intermiten, and had yet to break it in.  Lawrence said they had lost drew a while back, as he was going  65 down the highway.

At 2:30 am our time Lawrence and Cetta had reached the Las Vegas strip. The last word i heard from them was at 8am, They had lost drew, and were now about to pass out.

8 hours of driving that took 10.

Maybe today could be called day two, as yesterday was completely spent getting packed, finalizing the dome structure, doing laundry, and an asortment of other crap to deal with.

Today we head out to Vegas, the half way point between the playa and albuquerque. I’m excited but tired, having had an asthma attack that kept me up for a few hours last night. Made the best of it, however, and made more coffee (im pre brewing most of what i’ll drink out there this year, i have no clue if i will end up with botulisim or not heh) and got a reservation for a night in san fransisco. oakland, actually, which is unfortunate but nessacary, drew’s monster rig just wont cut it pulling the uhaul when we need to park in the city.

my poor car is packed to the brim, and i still have much more to pack in there. I dont know how i will do it but i will somehow. Its a good thing drew got that trailer, i dont know how i could have done this without more cargo space.

thats it for now, more from the road later.

Gorillasound had a massive up date to their website. Click the link to the right to see the new mixes and featured dj’s.

And with that I am off for the next 2 weeks, going to burning man then a trip down the California coast. i will update with pictures if i am able to get wireless access. Untill then i leave you in the hands of Editor Betty.

if youre heading out also, we’ll be around 5 and d ring, come say hi, i’ll be next to the big contraption with giant zia sun symbols in a green parashute dome.

1 Respect the Venue
Venues are HARD to come by. Respect them. Many beautiful venues can not be used any more because people have completely disrespected everything about them. Left a horrible mess, graffed it up and made it look like a damned pig pen. Its your new home. Don’t shit in it. Make it a sacred spot.
2 Respect the Music
Ok, so I admit it, some of the music out there sucks. Some of it rocks. What we all like is our own preference. Don’t diss people cause they like something you don’t; we all have our reasons for whatever it is we like and don’t like, so just accept it for what it is and move on. Unless the DJ passes out on the decks. Thats another story.

3 Respect your Neighbor
This is your chosen family. If you cant respect them, go elsewhere. If you don’t like a few people, just leave them be. They’ll likely do the same.

4 Know your Promoters
They’re all not the same! Some provide consistent, awesome events. Some are just sketchy jackasses. Make friends. Learn who’s cool and who’s got a bad reputation, and focus on the good. Take it from an old timer partier, Quality always wins out over Quantity

5 Bring only your good vibes
What’s the point of going to a party if all you’re going to do is start drama and cause problems for everyone? Just keep it at home. Watch the lifetime channel. After a good cry, come back with a big smile on your face to spread to your chosen family.

6 Bring Extra
Think about your friends. You’re there to party right? Then bring a bit extra. Maybe you’ll meet someone who will give back a bit more too.

7 Handle your Chemicals
If all you want is to get fucked up, stay home. Don’t be the douche bag that freaks out on whatever you ingest. Everyone will know you as that one kid who freaks out, and you’ll soon find less people who want you there.

8 Leave No Trace
Leave no trace means a lot more than not dropping your water bottle in the middle of the dance floor for someone else to slip on then have to clean up. It means not blowing up and causing problems with the cops, it means not pissing off the neighbors. It means leaving your positive energy in that spot that you had that really great damned experience in.

9 Participate
No party sucks more than a bunch of old, jaded cranky old bastards or new, boring, shy noobs standing around looking at each other and at the dj. Get out there and dance. Learn to spin Poi. Dress up for your night out. It doesn’t take much to get some kind of blinky light and a furry hat going, but its always an attention grabber and, whether you realize it or not, you’ll add that much more vibrancy to this scene.

10 Keep It Real
We all can smell fake a mile away. No one cares who you know, how much of this or that you have. Learn to develop your own awesomeness in whatever it is you do, and people will like you just fine. If you like dancing to polka at a rave danced in a furry costume, do it, and be the best damned polka furry you can be. As crazy as it is, people will come to respect you.

massive update: list of some of the larger sound art camps dj lineups.
thanks to the kids on Tribe for the list

Obviously there’s no way i can hear all these, so im going to try to pick the best to cover on NMSCENE

Notes from PleasureSean from email Aug 16
Quick Aside: Did you know that in the Indonesian language “Burningman” is roughly translated to…
“The sound of 1,000 parties all going off at the same time.” Weird huh.
OK – first off, I goofed in my previous email – the total eclipse of the moon is on Monday night/Tuesday morning, not Tuesday night like the bogus astronomy website that I looked at said. Sorry ’bout that. The eclipse starts at 12:40am and is total from about 2:45am to about 4:15 am. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see these too often, so I’ll be up for a big one that night – meet me on the Man at the total eclipse of the moon for a toast (more info on that below). OK on to the regularly scheduled programming.
So below I’ve gathered info on what looks like some of the better parties and events on the playa. Obviously there’s a ton more stuff going on and I definitely have a personal bias as to what I like, but hey it’s a good start for most people. So here’s a couple of options to check out.
BADDASS DANCE THEME CAMPS
Deep End: (9:00/G) daytime only
Um duh, really needs no explanation – biggest daytime party on the playa. Tons of beautiful people with big smiles, full bar, stripper poles, huge stage, international superstar DJs…you get the idea. Totally new redesigned space this year – should be a hoot. DJ schedule below.
El Circo (2:00/A)
After a year off, the stylin modern primitives return to pick it up and throw it down again in their massive dome. Can be totally religious but also can get so jam packed that you can’t dance, so it’s a bit more on the large scale side of things. However, if you stop by at some point in the week (like super late or Sunday night can be good) and there is room inside, get in their and shake some ass as it can be absolutely magical there.
False Profit (4:30/Esplanade)
Local SF troublemakers bringing you the early week breakbeat party on Tuesday night with the Space Cowboys Unimog. Because the life you lead may be your own.
Fringe/Cirque Bezerk (9:30/Esplanade-Arctic)
Cirque Bezerk is doing their live circus act again this year in their huge dome. Last time in 2005 it was so packed you couldn’t get anywhere near seeing it unless you got there hours in advance, but maybe they’ll do more shows and have it set up so it can accommodate more people. So check it if you can get in, but realize it’s going to be a highly sought after spectacle that might be too crowded. After the circus performance, Fringe Camp takes over the dome for DJ disco action. Big nights include the Fort Knox 5/LorinBassnectar night on Friday night, but probably going to be worth a check any night of the week if your in the hood.
Pink Mammoth (unmapped - usually about 8:30/F)
Daytime house music setup that has really come into its own in the last few years. Groovy house music and a fun vibe. Nice.
Gravity Point (10:00/A)
Don’t know too much about these kids, but they were doing some interesting music last year that was a bit more varied than the house and breakbeat you hear elsewhere, so probably worth checking out if you’re cruising by.
Green Gorilla Lounge (10:00/H)
While I know that breakbeat has been all the rage since like 2001, I find myself dancing to a lot of house music at Burningman because my body just can’t move like an 18 year old b-boy on speed for too long. So I’m usually good for a couple of intense breakbeat dance sessions but for the most part, I dig the groovier and funkier house beats that let you work it out on the dance floor for hours. Well, GGL serves this us in spades - and hey, if you’re nice, they’ve got a full bar too. What a world. There’s a ton of well known world class house DJs on the playa this year and Green Gorilla will likely be hosting most of them at some point, so trust the DJ here, they know what they are doing.
Philadelphia Experiment/PEX (7:30/Esplanade)
If you didn’t follow the sign to Philly to the back rows last year, you missed it, but you won’t this year. Philly showing up with a strong lineup of superstar house DJs and their local kids. I can’t predict the future, but I bet this place is gonna be jumpin. Monday night opening night party with King Britt should be a treat.
STYLIN ART CARS
House of Lotus Lorax
They’re ditching the theme camp and going with a mobile DJ setup based on Dr. Seuss’ Lorax this year. House and funky breaks are the style. They’ll be out at Hudzo’s Thursday night party and are doing a burn night party on the open playa at their friends art sculpture (not sure which one, but look for the Lorax).
Space Cowboys Unimog
Who knew that German military vehicles could be put to such good use – seriously the sound system on this is better than half of the clubs in SF and the Space Cowboys DJs lineup is deep with talent. They are mostly on the breakbeat tip, but they also go into some housier stuff as well as some jungle/drum and bass too. The Friday night hoedown is their big event, so definitely stop by and at least witness the spectacle on Friday night – it’ll be deep playa at one of the major art pieces. They’ll also be all over the playa the rest of the week with a full schedule shown at the end of this email. Space Cowboys Unimog - Giving you the business since 2001.
Smurfnutz Snail & Mushroom Car
This is a new camp of SF/LA kids with JZ and Tuhin from the Red Melon house crew pitching in for the musical direction. Look for a snail pulling a mushroom art car and you’ve got it. Music will be house/tech house and they’ll also do a daytime chilled setup at their camp dome at 7:30/I.
Purgatory Cruiser
I saw this rig cruising a couple of times last year and it looked and sounded impressive – kind of like a smaller Unimog/Spaceship looking thing in the front towing a medium sized flatbed DJ setup. Mostly breakbeat on it, but Eric Sharp and Miles Maeda will be doing a house night on Friday night.
Disorient Express (DEX)
This is the massive multi-car setup that has signs that light up and says “Disorient.” They are a big crew out of NYC that throws a mobile party every night with mostly their local NY DJs. Can be a damn cool scene and it’s always nice to mix up the party schedule with some of the east coast vibe.
Monkey Island Art Car
Local pranksters from SF with a palm tree island and monkey themed art car DJ setup.
MIND BLOWING ART PIECES
Hudzo’s Monkeysnake Zoetrope (aka Homouroboros)
The mad scientist got loose again and created his third zoetrope – bigger, faster, and monkey-er. Come out and give Petey and crew some love as lots of people devoted some big ass chunks of their life recently to making this happen. The big party event here is the Thursday night blowout with the honorary Monkeysnake DJ Lee Coombs and the House of Lotus Lorax car providing the beats. Will. Not. Suck. At. All.
Dan Das Man’s Crude Awakening
Three words. Biggest Flamethrower Ever. Add that to eight of those magnificent 7-ton massive steel sculptures that Dan and Karen are known for and you have Crude Awakening. Friday night they burn the Derrick tower, so that will probably be one of the pyro highlights of the festival and they’ll have a DJ/dance setup at the art piece every night, including a new twist to the piece on Saturday after the Derrick has burned. Like you’re gonna miss this, uh huh.
Steam Punk Tree House
Massive interactive steel and wood tree house sculpture..oh my.

SUNDAY
Don’t see any special events outside of the Temple Burn, but Sunday was super fun last year just roaming around as the city population drops a lot and you get another taste of the mid-week vibe.
RANDOM NOTES
Out of town guest DJ’s definitely worth checking out if you stumble upon one of their sets: Lee Coombs, Lee Burridge, Fort Knox Five, Freq Nasty, Dylan Rhymes, King Britt, Nigel Richards, Marques Wyatt, Miles Maeda, & DJ Dan. And then of course, there’s a slew of ridiculously talented local SF DJ’s (that I’m not even going to try to name them all because I’ll forget one and they’ll hate me for it) who bring out their big game for the playa. So rest assured, the art of music will definitely be provided for.
It’s dustier than normal this due to the drought winter we just had and apparently some of the bigger art pieces have been put behind their setup schedules by some really windy and dusty days recently. So make sure your eye protection/goggles and some type of scarf/face mask for breathing are totally sorted. Maybe even bring an extra pair of goggle in case you lose/break your main pair because I think we’re gonna need em this year. Then again, no one said Burningman was Club Med.
Everyone be super safe on the ride up and back – it’s the most dangerous part of the whole week, so make sure you get there and back in one piece. Specifically: follow the speed limit especially on that last 100 miles to the playa, skip the partying on the drive, drive slower due to your overloaded car, and make sure your tires stay on the road and don’t veer off the shoulder on the 2-lane highway for the last 100 miles – that’s a common accident and it can be cause a car to flip over so make sure it doesn’t happen to you.
As for me – I’m camping on the down low with a couple of friends in Secret Agent Ghetto in the back rows of the north side – if you find our camp, we’ll have to kill you (or at least seriously tickle you) so hopefully see you out exploring the town.

I’m frickin tired. It goes with the territory, i suppose. I’m in the last few days before heading off to the playa again this year and there’s still so much to do. I had massive problems with the dome Sunday, scaling it up from the design i worked with at family ten year didn’t work so well. I think i figured a way to make the thing work better this time. I hope i have any way, they’re saying its going to be an extra dusty year this year, as the snow pack in the surrounding mountains was half of what it usually is. This means that the little moisture that the dry lake bed gets was insufficient enough to get to all of the dirt out there, and the usual hard surface hasn’t “reglued” itself leaving a lot of sand everywhere.

In other news, there was a lot of drama in the surrounding New Mexico scene this weekend as a bunch of shady promoters caused a massive uproar as their party disintegrated into chaos. In response to this, I’m going to be writing a few guides; “the noob’s guide to the NMSCENE,” “the partier’s guide to the nmscene” and possibly a “promoter’s guide to the NMSCENE,” and a list of ten principles that i think its high time someone stated, a sort of guidepost for everyone, something to strive for. these will be coming out over the next weeks as time permits me to write them. They will be free to download and i suggest you all distribute them to your friends. They’ll be filled with tips for surviving winter parties and next year’s outdoor season, along with a outline of things from camp deckardo and my dome from burning man this year.

thats all for now, going to go work on the dome some more. I’ll be posting more later.
