Joe Nice: Albuquerque show’s that it can throw down properPosted by: admin in Reviews, musicA lot of people have given up on Albuquerque as a whole, as capable of throwing a quality event. Although there are numerous things going on here in town on a nightly basis, these gatherings have regularly brought the worst that this city can offer, featuring amature sound, violent people, massively negative vibes, numerous crimes, and bad musical offerings. Too often these “all ages” events are filled with 14 yr old kids who are only looking for a safe haven to get fucked up and start fights attend these events and have, as a result, pushed the legitimate, quality promotion crews to throw events in other cities like Taos and Santa Fe. Last night felt like a pivotal night for Albuquerque after a 2 year drought of safe, music focused electronic events. Although there have been parties that have gone off fairly well, last night brought back memories of the tight, familial events that occurred at the brewery in Santa Fe and junebug from a few years ago. There is, of course, a reason as to why this party went off when all the other events at every other party have fallen flat on their faces: It was strictly about the music. Everyone there was genuinely excited to hear dubstep, and Joe Nice did a proper job of spinning some great tunes. Every event will eventually show what the promoter behind it is about; sex, ego, drugs, whatever. Last night was about playing some damn good music. Of course, there were some downers; i didn’t care for the set that was spun after Illkid left (i don’t know the dj’s name, it wasn’t a bad set, it just wasn’t for me too much) and the venue was just a bit too small for the turn out, not to mention the fact that the cops, having nothing better to do, kicked me and everyone who was standing outside off of the sidewalk and made us leave, which wasn’t too big a deal, as we were about to go home anyway. Big props to everyone involved with this party, you’ve done something right here in Albuquerque after such a long time, I can only hope that you can replicate your success. 9/10 stars

Quick reviews: Tango Hoy! and The Second Annual Duke City Burlesque showPosted by: admin in Reviews, CultureSo the last two weekends editor Betty and I have been going out to experience things other than the regular line up of electronic music and house parties and bars. The fabulous Ms Whitney conjured up a bunch of tickets from her dancing instructor to Tango Hoy!, a review of the history of Tango music that was performed live at the Hispanic Cultural Center off of Cesar Chavez. I thoroughly enjoyed the time there. Two dancers, two singers, a narrator/pianist, bass player and master accordion guru played sixteen songs that narrated the history of Tango beginning with the slaves and cowboys in south America visiting the bordellos in cities like Montevideo, Buenos Aries and Sao Paulo. This was a world class performance for free, and i can not say enough good things about the performance. If you have a chance to see another showing (possibly in New York and other large cities) i highly recommend it. This last weekend editor Betty and I went to see the Duke City Burlesque show down at the Kiva Auditorium, and had a really fun time. All of the performances were damn fun to watch, and the tounge in cheek humor with some of them were really fun. Even the bad jokes by Alibi Film Editor Devon O’Leary had me laughing at points, but more of a ha-ha fail laugh, heh. If you missed out, well, you really did, because we saw MORE BOOBS than you’d see anywhere else in albuquerque outside of a strip club, but at twice the entertainment value. Big props to the organizers of the show.

Saturday: Justin Ro and Gabe Madrid go DeluxePosted by: admin in Culture, Cool Shit, musicI cant think of a duo who should be spining great tunes together right now than these two. Check it out this weekend!
Burning Man. Its words that will either make you puke or say huh? or make your eyes light up like a child and squeel with delight. Last year was a dificult burn for me. Our camp was filled with a lot of just really bad vibes and it ended poorly. I learned a lot about people and myself at last year’s burn, little of it was positive. But i did expereince some amazing shit- just utterly bad ass in its scope. Its why i got a ticket again for this year, because the good outweighs the bad. Here’s a video i found on YouTube that has seven minnutes of time lapsed video from the deep end camp perspective which captures, faithfully, the good parts of the burn, put on fast forward. |
